近几年来,车牌识别技术成为了一个热门。车牌识别系统集中了先进的光电、计算机、图像处理、模式识别、远程数据访问等技术,实现对监控路面过往的每一辆机动车的特征图像和车辆全景图像进行连续全天候实时记录,计算机根据所拍摄的图像进行牌照自动识别。该系统可以应用于路桥关口,实现对过往车辆的不停车收费,还可以置于交通要塞,实现对进出车辆的不间断适时监控,除此之外,车牌识别系统还可以应用在以下几个领域:

(1)交通适时监控。利用车牌识别系统的摄像设备,可以直接监视相应路段的交通状况,获得车辆密度、队长、排队规律等交通信息,防范和观察交通事故。这种适时监控系统一旦成功运用,将极大的方便交通管理,节约大量的人力物力。同时也提高管理效率。

(2) Measurement of flow control indicator parameters. The system can
measure and count many traffic flow indicator parameters, such as the
total service flow rate, total travel time, total inflow and outflow,
vehicle types and flow composition, daily traffic flow, hour, minute
traffic flow, peak time of traffic flow, average speed, vehicle density,
etc., which provide necessary traffic flow information for the traffic
guidance system.
